Why Judith Mziray made her way back to science

February 17, 2022

February is Black History Month, and we’re proud to share the stories of Black employees at Trane Technologies.

Get to know Judith Mziray, Security and Compliance Leader, Information Technology, Thermo King Americas.

Judith Mziray has always loved science. While growing up in a family full of scientists may have sparked this interest, she also enjoyed the challenge of science--it kept her attention.

“My dad was an OB-GYN in Tanzania. I have sisters and brothers who work in public health and as doctors and engineers. Science was a big part of our upbringing. In school, I found science the most challenging and interesting," shared Judith. “I always knew I would pursue a career in science.”

From the lab to the office

Judith came to the US from Tanzania to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. After graduating, she landed a job at a lab, analyzing data using various software technologies. She enjoyed this so much that she decided to pursue a Master of Science in Computer Science at the University of Chicago.

After graduation, Judith was offered a consulting position at Deloitte where her primary focus was on audit, risk management and security projects. She later joined Accenture where she held various management roles in Information Security. While Judith enjoyed consulting for various

clients across different industries, she always had a passion for companies which were rooted in science. That love led her to apply to Thermo King.

“I was drawn to the company because of its sustainability commitments,” added Judith.

Paving the way

Judith now works at Thermo King as a cyber security and compliance leader, an occupation that typically is male-dominated, but this has never been a deterrent for her.

“What was instrumental for me is growing up in a family full of scientists where I was encouraged and empowered to do what I set my mind to do. I focus on the opportunities ahead, and I always do my best. I also believe in elevating other people. I have received support throughout my career, and it is important to me that I give back,” said Judith.

“Our family visited a school in a small village in Tanzania during a 2019 visit. We donated and distributed classroom supplies to the entire school of approximately 400 students. The joy I saw from the students and my children is an experience I will never forget. We have continued to sponsor the school ever since.”

Proud to work for Thermo King Americas

In addition to enjoying her work each day, working for a company where everyone is passionate about improving the world is why Judith is here to stay.

“My teammates have been so friendly and helpful to me. Some places are resistant to change and unwelcoming to new people, so I truly appreciate the spirit of teamwork and positivity here,” said Judith. “I love working for a company focused on minimizing carbon emissions, preserving the environment, and developing solutions for real life problems.”

She has also passed down her love for science to her daughters continuing the family tradition.

“My daughters loved a science camp that was sponsored by Trane Technologies through the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) this past summer,” said Judith proudly. “They loved interacting with students from all over the country. They built and programmed robots, performed flight tests with drones, and completed several other meaningful projects.”
